WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Wednesday a sweeping new initiative requiring all residential thermostats to be registered with a federal database by January 2027, citing “climate justice” and the need to ensure “equitable temperature distribution” across American households.
The Thermal Equity and Monitoring Program (TEMP) will mandate that all homeowners and renters submit monthly reports documenting their thermostat settings, square footage, and the demographic composition of their households. Properties that exceed their allocated “thermal footprint” will face progressive penalties starting at $500 per month.
“For too long, wealthy Americans have hoarded comfortable indoor temperatures while marginalized communities suffer,” said newly appointed Temperature Czar Dr. Marina Coldwell at a press conference. “This program ensures that climate-controlled air is distributed fairly according to need, not privilege.”
Under the new regulations, households will be assigned a baseline temperature range based on income, family size, and geographic location. Single-family homes over 2,500 square feet will be limited to 64 degrees in winter and 78 degrees in summer. Apartment dwellers and those below the poverty line will receive “thermal credits” allowing them to set their thermostats up to three degrees outside the standard range.
The DOE will partner with smart thermostat manufacturers to enable remote monitoring capabilities. Homes without smart thermostats will be required to install government-approved devices at the homeowner’s expense, estimated at $800-$1,200 per unit.
Critics have called the program invasive and unenforceable, but the administration points to successful pilot programs in Portland and Burlington. “Voluntary compliance has been extraordinary,” Coldwell noted. “Though we’re prepared to dispatch thermal compliance officers if necessary.”
The program includes exemptions for medical conditions, provided homeowners submit documentation from a licensed physician and renew their “thermal hardship waiver” annually. Senior citizens over 75 will receive a two-degree accommodation after completing a mandatory online training module about climate responsibility.
