WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation announced Friday that all Americans will be required to attend a mandatory 8-hour “Vehicular Privilege Acknowledgment Seminar” before renewing their driver’s licenses, beginning January 2027.
The new initiative, part of the Infrastructure Equity and Reparative Justice Act, will cost $347 per attendee and must be completed in person at designated federal facilities. The seminars will cover topics including “Understanding Your Carbon Debt,” “Checking Your Driving Privilege,” and a mandatory 90-minute segment on “Apologizing to Public Transportation.”
Transportation Secretary Miguel Vasquez explained the program during a press conference held via Zoom from his government motorcade. “For too long, Americans have operated personal vehicles without fully grasping the societal harm this causes,” Vasquez said. “These seminars will help drivers understand that choosing a car over a bus is choosing individualism over community.”
The curriculum includes interactive exercises where participants must write apology letters to cyclists they may have “emotionally endangered” by existing in adjacent lanes. Attendees will also calculate their lifetime “asphalt footprint” and receive a Certificate of Automotive Remorse suitable for framing.
Drivers over 65 will be required to attend a supplemental 4-hour session titled “Unlearning Problematic Traffic Patterns From a Less Enlightened Era.” Those who own pickup trucks must complete an additional module called “Deconstructing Toxic Hauling Culture.”
The DOT clarified that electric vehicle owners will receive a 15-minute credit toward their seminar time, though they’ll still need to acknowledge their “lithium privilege” and “charging station accessibility advantages.”
Several states have already constructed the mandatory seminar facilities, converted from former DMV buildings that will now exclusively host the educational sessions. Regular DMV services will be relocated to smaller, less accessible locations to “encourage alternative renewal methods.”
When asked about Americans in rural areas where public transportation doesn’t exist, Vasquez suggested they “consider that a learning opportunity.”
