WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation unveiled sweeping new regulations Friday requiring all automobiles manufactured after January 2028 to include mandatory “wellness checkpoints” that prevent drivers from starting their vehicles if they exhibit signs of “emotional distress or negative thought patterns.”
Transportation Secretary Elena Vásquez announced the initiative during a press conference, explaining that the new AI-powered systems will use in-cabin cameras and voice analysis to detect elevated stress levels, angry facial expressions, or “problematic language” before allowing ignition.
“Road rage doesn’t start when you’re already driving,” Vásquez said. “It starts when you’re still in your driveway, upset about something you saw on social media or an argument you had at breakfast. This technology will give Americans a mandatory five-minute cooldown period to recenter themselves before operating a 4,000-pound vehicle.”
The system, developed in partnership with several Silicon Valley firms, will reportedly scan drivers’ faces and voice patterns for indicators of agitation. If negative emotions are detected, the vehicle will display calming nature scenes on the dashboard and play guided meditation audio until the driver’s biometrics return to acceptable levels.
Drivers who attempt to override the system more than three times in a calendar month will be required to complete a mandatory online anger management course before their vehicle will start again. The courses, administered through the Federal Highway Administration’s new Digital Wellness Portal, must be completed within 72 hours or the vehicle enters permanent lockdown mode.
Early testing in focus groups showed mixed results. “I was running late for work and my car wouldn’t start because I said a bad word when I stubbed my toe getting in,” reported beta tester Marcus Chen of Portland. “I had to sit there for eight minutes listening to whale sounds while my boss called me six times.”
The regulations also mandate that all vehicles play a brief affirmation — “I am calm, I am centered, I choose peace today” — before the engine turns over.
Implementation begins in sixteen months, with full compliance required by model year 2030.
