DOT Orders Federal Database for Travel Over 50 Miles

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation announced Thursday a sweeping new initiative requiring all Americans to submit detailed travel itineraries to a federal database at least 72 hours before any journey exceeding 50 miles from their registered home address.

The “Safe and Equitable Mobility Tracking System” (SEMTS) will launch in phases beginning September 1st, with full enforcement expected by early 2027. Transportation Secretary Linda Moreno called the program “a common-sense approach to reducing our nation’s carbon footprint while ensuring optimal resource allocation across our transportation infrastructure.”

Under the new regulations, citizens planning trips must log into the SEMTS portal and provide their departure time, destination, route, vehicle information, number of passengers, and stated purpose of travel. The system will then assign each trip a “Mobility Impact Score” ranging from green (essential travel) to red (discretionary carbon waste).

Travelers receiving yellow or red scores may still proceed with their journey but will be enrolled in the department’s Carbon Offset Payment Plan, with monthly fees ranging from $47 to $312 depending on trip frequency and vehicle emissions class. Those who accumulate more than 15 red-scored trips in a calendar year will be required to attend a four-hour “Mindful Mobility Workshop” at their nearest federal building.

“This isn’t about limiting freedom,” Secretary Moreno emphasized at a press conference. “It’s about making sure every American understands the collective impact of their individual choices. Do you really need to visit your sister in Phoenix, or could a video call suffice?”

The department has hired 8,700 new Travel Compliance Coordinators to review submitted itineraries and issued grants to several tech companies to develop mobile apps that will automatically report users’ locations to the SEMTS database in real-time.

Emergency exemptions will be available for documented medical situations, though critics note the exemption application process requires three weeks advance notice.
