WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that all American drivers will be required to complete a mandatory 40-hour “Emotional Intelligence and Road Empathy” course before their licenses can be renewed, citing new research that vehicular disagreements stem from “unresolved trauma and insufficient validation.”
Transportation Secretary Amanda Holloway unveiled the program at a press conference, explaining that traditional driver’s education has focused too heavily on “antiquated concepts” like turn signals, speed limits, and right-of-way rules while ignoring the “psychological root causes of automotive conflict.”
“For too long, we’ve treated driving as a mechanical skill,” Holloway said. “But when someone cuts you off in traffic, that’s not really about lane positioning. That’s about their inner child seeking acknowledgment in a society that refuses to see them.”
The new curriculum will require drivers to complete modules on “Recognizing Your Parking Triggers,” “Affirming the Merge,” and “Holding Space for Aggressive Drivers.” A final exam will test participants on their ability to respond to various traffic scenarios with therapeutic language rather than horn usage.
One sample question asks: “A driver runs a red light in front of you. Do you: A) Honk, B) Gesture angrily, or C) Take three deep breaths and remind yourself that their behavior likely reflects childhood attachment issues beyond their conscious control?”
The course, which must be completed in person at federally approved “Driving Healing Centers,” will cost $847 per participant. Drivers who fail the emotional intelligence assessment will be required to retake the course and attend supplementary “Roadway Reconciliation Workshops.”
Several state DMVs have already reported appointment backlogs extending into 2028. California announced it will offer an expedited option for an additional $400 fee, which includes a complimentary healing crystal for the dashboard.
Critics of the program who contacted the DOT were reportedly invited to “explore where this resistance is really coming from.”
