Michigan Father Kills Teen Son, Shoots Two Other Children After Greeting Them for School

A Michigan father confessed to killing his 17-year-old son and shooting two younger children as they prepared for school, telling investigators he felt “stressed” about an upcoming sentencing for indecent exposure.

The father greeted his children with “good morning” on what seemed like an ordinary school day before pulling a .380 handgun and opening fire. The teenage son died from his injuries. Two other children survived the attack after being shot while still in bed.

The confession came during police questioning following the morning shooting. Investigators learned the man had been scheduled for sentencing on an indecent exposure charge and cited that legal pressure as motivation for the attack on his own children.

The 17-year-old victim was reportedly lounging on a couch when he was shot. His younger siblings were in their beds, just beginning to wake up for the school day ahead. The father’s casual greeting before the violence suggests the children had no warning of what was about to happen.

The two surviving children received emergency medical treatment. Their current conditions have not been released, but they are expected to physically recover from their gunshot wounds.

The case raises questions about how a man facing relatively minor criminal charges reached the point of attempting to murder his own children. Indecent exposure typically carries penalties ranging from probation to a few years in prison, depending on circumstances and prior record. Nothing in the legal system suggested imminent imprisonment or life-altering consequences that would explain such extreme violence.

Law enforcement officials are now reviewing whether any warning signs were missed. The father’s pending criminal case would have been known to courts and prosecutors, but there is no indication anyone flagged concerns about danger to his family.

Michigan law allows judges to impose protective orders and restrict firearm access for defendants deemed dangerous, but such measures apparently were not pursued in this case. The man had legal possession of the .380 handgun used in the shooting.

The father now faces murder charges for his son’s death and attempted murder charges for shooting his other two children. His prior indecent exposure case has become a footnote to far more serious crimes.

Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue the death penalty or life imprisonment. Michigan abolished capital punishment in 1846, meaning life without parole is the maximum sentence available.
