DOT Mandates ‘Emotional Support Lanes’ on All Federal Highways by 2028

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation announced Friday that all federally funded highways will be required to include dedicated “emotional support lanes” by 2028, following concerns that traditional road infrastructure fails to accommodate drivers experiencing anxiety, stress, or existential dread during their commutes.

The new lanes, which will be painted in calming lavender and marked with mindfulness symbols, will feature a reduced speed limit of 35 mph and require drivers to display a government-issued “Mental Wellness Placard” on their dashboard. Transportation Secretary Amanda Chen explained that the initiative responds to “mounting evidence” that traditional highways create hostile environments for emotionally vulnerable motorists.

“For too long, we’ve designed our roads around outdated concepts like efficiency and getting places quickly,” Chen said at a press conference. “These emotional support lanes recognize that sometimes drivers need a safe space to process their feelings at 35 miles per hour while other commuters pass them.”

The placards, available through a new federal portal launching next month, will require applicants to complete a 47-page questionnaire assessing their “highway-related emotional needs.” Qualifying conditions include fear of merging, general traffic anxiety, and “existential uncertainty about destination choices.”

Critics have raised concerns about the estimated $340 billion price tag and questioned whether reducing highway capacity by 15-20% will improve traffic flow. However, the DOT dismissed these objections as “lacking empathy” and “prioritizing productivity over wellness.”

The program includes mandatory rest stops every five miles featuring meditation pods, therapy llamas, and charging stations for emotional support devices. Drivers caught using emotional support lanes without proper documentation will face fines starting at $500.

Several progressive states have already announced plans to add “trigger warning” signs before on-ramps, alerting sensitive drivers to potentially stressful highway conditions ahead, including construction zones, aggressive drivers, and “vehicles displaying opposing political bumper stickers.”
