WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Friday a comprehensive new initiative requiring all American households to register their refrigerators with a federal database by December 31st, citing concerns over “unmonitored thermal inefficiencies” and “the national security implications of unsupervised food storage.”
The Refrigerator Registration and Compliance Act, buried in Section 47(b) of the recent infrastructure bill, mandates that homeowners provide the make, model, energy rating, and internal temperature settings of all refrigeration units to the newly created Office of Domestic Cooling Oversight.
“For too long, Americans have operated refrigerators without any federal guidance or accountability,” said Deputy Energy Secretary Patricia Holmgren during a press conference. “We’ve identified over 43 million households running their units at temperatures below the recommended 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not just wasteful — it’s a threat to our climate goals.”
Under the new regulations, refrigerators found operating below 38 degrees or above 42 degrees will trigger an automatic notification to local authorities. Repeat offenders face fines starting at $250, with provisions for mandatory energy counseling sessions.
The database will also track “high-risk cooling behaviors,” including the storage of items on refrigerator tops, excessive magnet use that may interfere with door seals, and keeping beer in garages during summer months.
“We’re not telling people what they can keep in their refrigerators,” Holmgren clarified. “We’re simply ensuring they’re storing it at federally compliant temperatures with appropriate documentation.”
Hardware stores report panic-buying of standalone freezers, which currently fall outside the registration requirements due to what the DOE calls a “legislative oversight” expected to be corrected in next year’s budget.
The registration portal crashes repeatedly during its first week online. A DOE spokesperson said the system was designed to handle up to 50,000 simultaneous users but received over 12 million registration attempts in the first hour, mostly from concerned citizens attempting to register their refrigerators before the deadline.
