WASHINGTON — In a sweeping executive order signed Monday morning, the White House announced the creation of a new federal agency tasked with monitoring and regulating citizen carbon footprints through mandatory smart refrigerator compliance.
The Environmental Appliance Monitoring Service (EAMS) will require all American households to register their refrigerators with the federal government by January 2027. Refrigerators manufactured after 2024 must be equipped with WiFi-enabled monitoring systems that track food waste, energy consumption, and “climate-irresponsible purchasing patterns.”
“Every time someone throws away half a tomato or buys non-locally-sourced cheese, they’re contributing to the climate crisis,” said newly appointed EAMS Director Patricia Thornwood at a press conference. “We can no longer allow Americans to make these decisions in the dark, literally and figuratively.”
Under the new system, households exceeding their monthly carbon allowance — calculated based on family size, geographic region, and “historical environmental justice factors” — will receive escalating penalties. First-time offenders face a written warning and mandatory enrollment in a four-hour online course titled “Rethinking Your Relationship With Leftovers.” Repeat violations could result in fines up to $500 or temporary refrigerator access restrictions.
The regulations include a controversial provision requiring refrigerators to temporarily lock if sensors detect “excessive meat products” or items shipped from more than 150 miles away. Users can appeal lockouts through a federal portal, though average processing times are estimated at 14-21 business days.
Privacy advocates have raised concerns about government surveillance of eating habits, but administration officials insist the data will only be used for “environmental compliance and public health optimization.”
Households with refrigerators manufactured before 2024 will be required to purchase government-approved retrofit monitoring kits at an average cost of $340, though low-income families may qualify for subsidized installations.
The program is expected to create approximately 12,000 new federal jobs for refrigerator compliance officers and data analysts.
