Federal Government Mandates All Citizens Maintain Active Social Media Presence or Face Monthly Fine

The Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday a new federal initiative requiring all Americans over the age of 12 to maintain an active profile on at least three government-approved social media platforms by January 2027.

The “Digital Wellness and Civic Engagement Act” mandates that citizens post a minimum of twice weekly on approved platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, and the newly launched USA.social — a federal social network currently in beta testing. Failure to meet posting requirements will result in a $50 monthly “Digital Disengagement Fee” automatically deducted from tax returns.

“We’ve observed concerning trends of Americans disconnecting from online spaces, which directly correlates with decreased civic participation,” said HHS Secretary Dr. Patricia Yamamoto at a press conference. “This initiative ensures every American remains connected, informed, and engaged in the digital public square.”

The legislation includes exemptions for citizens who can provide documentation from a licensed therapist confirming that social media use causes them “severe psychological distress.” However, these exemptions require annual renewal and a $200 processing fee.

Posts must contain a minimum of 15 words and cannot consist solely of family photos, pet pictures, or “low-engagement content.” The bill specifically defines qualified content as “posts that demonstrate awareness of current events, political developments, or approved public health messaging.”

A new federal agency, the Bureau of Digital Participation, will employ approximately 4,500 workers to monitor compliance through partnerships with major tech companies. The bureau clarified that it will not read private messages, but will track posting frequency, engagement metrics, and “participation quality scores.”

Early polls show 73% of Americans oppose the measure, though supporters argue this resistance proves exactly why the mandate is necessary. Senator Mark Henderson praised the initiative, calling it “a common-sense approach to combating the epidemic of digital hermits threatening our democracy.”

The first compliance reports are due March 15, 2027.
