Students Must Eat Bugs Twice Weekly or Face Re-Education

WASHINGTON — The Department of Education announced Monday that all public school cafeterias will be required to offer “climate-conscious lunch alternatives” beginning in fall 2027, with students expected to choose bug-based protein options at least twice weekly or face mandatory environmental education sessions.

The new “FutureFood Initiative” mandates that cricket flour, mealworm patties, and roasted grasshopper bowls be available alongside traditional menu items. Students who consistently select beef, pork, or chicken over insect proteins will be flagged in a new federal database and enrolled in after-school “Sustainability Awareness Programs.”

“We’re not forcing anyone to eat bugs,” explained Deputy Secretary of Education Melissa Hartwell during a press conference. “We’re simply creating educational consequences for students who make environmentally irresponsible choices. It’s about teaching critical thinking skills.”

The program will track student lunch selections through an upgraded digital payment system that records each meal choice. Parents will receive monthly “Carbon Impact Reports” detailing their children’s protein selections and comparing their family’s cafeteria footprint to district averages.

Schools that fail to meet a 40% insect protein adoption rate will lose eligibility for federal nutrition funding. To ease the transition, the USDA is developing child-friendly marketing materials including animated mascots “Benny the Beetle” and “Crissy Cricket” that will appear on cafeteria posters and lunch trays.

Several pilot schools have already begun the program. At Lincoln Elementary in Portland, Oregon, cafeteria manager Sharon DeVries reports mixed results. “The kids seem to like the barbecue cricket chips,” she said. “Though we’ve had to change the name to ‘Crunchy Protein Crisps’ because the word ‘cricket’ caused some lunch tray incidents.”

The initiative also requires schools to eliminate chocolate milk by 2028, replacing it with a new beverage called “Neutral Nutrition Fluid” that officials describe as “strategically unflavored to avoid creating sugar dependencies.”
